Last year I attended the Doctors Without Borders, Forced From Home, exhibition. It showed the path of refugees and I was shocked at what they suffered. But then I saw something that horrified me -- the cholera tents. I'm a RL nurse and I can't put into words how aghast I was as I saw that the cots cholera struck patients were lying in had holes cut into them so the excrement could continuously drain from them...then I saw the rain boots. The medical staff had to wear them as they worked with the patients. They had to constantly wash the floors with water hoses. The rain boots were put on before entering the tent and taken off immediately after to prevent contaminating other medical tents. My desire to decrease suffering among patients only magnified and the boots will be a lasting memory for me. This is just one reason the Spoonful of Sugar Festival is so important to me.
